Proud to be a BIHARI

One day, while I was chatting with one of my friends, she wrote a word. I asked her what did it mean? She says, do not you know it? Are you a Bihari??. I could not follow the meaning since the word was misspelt.

Another day, one of my friends was caught cheating in the examination, the teacher asked him to leave the examination hall. He requested the teacher for clemency, the teacher retorts "This is no Bihar".

Has Bihari become a synonymn for some invective or insult? Is it the right means to express your contempt? Does not it show your regional bias and chauvinism? How are you any better than those imperial whites who justifies the enslavement of blacks on the pretext of racial superiority? If you do not know what Bihar is, let me tell you.

Bihar, a state in the eastern part of the country. If you wish to go by history, it is the land which gave India great kings like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka and many historians consider, Patliputra of Magadha was the first capital of India. This land was the birthplace of great religious and spiritual leaders like Mahavira and Buddha whose teachings have made India known as the land of spiritual divinity. This land was the playground of warriors like Veer Babu Kunwar Singh, who immolated his hand in the first war of independence. Mahatma Gandhi too chose Bihar as the place for his first agitation against the British (remember Champaran??). Our first president of India, Rajendra babu too was a bihari.

Bihar people are not stupid, instead they are hard working and intelligent. If you have any doubts, you can check the results of Civil services exam in India, and unfailingly, Biharis have figured on the list in much greater numbers than any other state. Even Bollywood had its share of biharis in the form of stalwarts as Shatrughan Sinha and Prakash Jha. So, the question that props up in every mind is what is wrong with Bihar??

Politics, poverty, casteism, ignorance and lack of education are the diseases which are making Bihar suffer. There has been literally no development during last twenty years. The chief minister of Bihar, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav is an epitome of corrupt politician. He is among the most famous politicians in the country, but known more for his rustic style, scandals and the ability to rule a state for last 15 years than any philanthropic deed. Casteism is so much deeply ingrained in the society that even one of my IIT friends says he is superior because he is a JHA, a brahmin and we lesser mortals can never equal him. So, till the day, educated people like him will willingly keep their eyes shut, there can be no sunrise. In Bihar, the condition of education is pathetic and almost every Bihari needs to go out of the state to receive quality education. With lack of infrastructure and prevading corruption, any economic boom is a distant dream.

But, even with all these scars marring the face of Bihar, I am proud to be a Bihari. After all no child shuns his mother, because she is no more beautiful.

The point u should keep in mind, that in India, often we mock each other at our regional biases. We fondly listen to "Sardar" jokes (e.g. Santa Banta) but jokes apart, they are undoubtedly one of the most successful clan in India. Bengalis face this banter for their uncanny bias towards "machh-bhaat". Even we make fun of south-Indians as well for their weird pronunciations. So it is not Bihar alone. "Bihari" like a "Sardar" has his/her own peculiar traits which makes them funny. Specially lawlessness is considered a synonym with Bihar....and in reality that is TRUE, which u can't deny. Anyway, we are all proud to be Indian, no matter we belong to Bihar or Bengal or Punjab or whatever else!

For monu bhaiya, u too know that despite not being officially the CM, even today it is Lalu who rules, Rabri or Buta Singh are mere stamp pads.

For Arnab da, When I say I am proud to be a Bihari, this is no attempt to deny the national integrity. I am Indian first, Bihari later. But, this post is to enlighten those arrogant and haughty souls who look at Biharis with scorn and disdain. A mild humor like Sardarji jokes are always welcome. But, any attempt to undermine the self-esteem of Biharis is culpable.

It was great that you have posted a sensitive issue.
Travelling length and breadth of the country i found something shocking and really unpleasant. I found, the general coaches of any express train in the country is stuffed with Bihari migrant labours ,it was a natural question to me, why so much of Biharis are travelling in such a pathetic conditions and that to in such a far off places ? why don't they stay back in their home and make living out of agriculture for which Bihar has got a fertile land hey what bout the industries in Bihar is it not enough to feed these people ,my friends, not only the trains but each and every city of the country is flooded with Bihari people working away from their family in inhuman conditions and making out their life. The answer is simple, the land of Bihar no more is safe for its own people economically, socially or personelly what ever the field it is.
Well I am not really interested in analysing the couses as it something to be used and reused by politicians for making their fake menifestos and promisses. What more can be expected from the leader who abbreviate IT sector for India in Trouble making prople fool ignoring the worldwide economic developments, and to make hell of it they even don t know how to behave when Honourable National Anthem is being played.
Looking into the eyes of starving children no expressions can be shown as we can not expect revolution in Bihar in near future even the anarchy is so acute as all the intellectual wealth of the state is migrating, deserting their motherland in vein with none to bother for but only to be plundered .

Hi anonymous, (yes, I need to address you like this, yaar plz leave ur name behind, even if u do not want to sign in blogspot).

Nice observation, in fact in a TV interview, when Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, an RJD leader and a sycophant of Laloo said "Biharis are today in every part of the country, building the nation, building roads, bridges etc.", the interviewer Purnima Advani came with a rejoinder "Why is Bihar lacking infrastructure then, why are Biharis not building Bihar?". You are right that Biharis are going out of Bihar, living in hellish conditions to earn a petty wage. In fact, Bihari majdoors were killed in Assam because the local residents felt they were being supplanted by Biharis. Same rhetoric is visible in Thackeray's speech when he says drive all biharis out of Mumbai. I am sure this pathetic condition of Bihar has its roots in ignorance, lack of education and poverty. The main culprit is all corrupt politicians, but how can we escape the blame that we have not done anything for Bihar?

Hey, I don't wanaa comment on the topic..but all I wanna say is..when More than half the youth from Bihar and UP go into Civil services with the hope that with a government job " UPARI BAHUT ACCHI MILTI HAI", I guess Illiteracy, poverty and ignorance can take a backseat and we change our mindset before blaming anyone. Ditto goes for the national scene.

It is NATURE!
Whatever happening in Bihar is nature so do not go against it. Allow it to take its own turns and forms.
Put something new man, it seems that you are forcing us to believe that "MK is a proud bihari!!!"
Change it now.

hi..it is nice to see that someone is actually taking this issue seriously.i am also from bihar and time and again have been facing the same issue.though it never really mattered that wat state i belong to but people around me helped me constantly realize that i m a "bihari"by popping up questions like do u hav electricity or how do u commute in bihar(as per their notions we biharis are still living in stone age).i hav lost count of the no of times i hav argued on this in vain.until and unless we dont change the face of bihar its going to be this way.we hav to pay for the follies of our politicians.right now i am writing a research paper on the condition of education in bihar and hope to forward it to the concerned authorities.i dont know if at all its going to mean anything to them but i am doing it as an attempt to understand what really is the problem with our education system..anyways kudos to u for ur attempt..goodluck..
