Never got another chance

Business Oppurtunities are like buses, if one goes, the other comes
-- Richard Branson
.

It may be true of business oppurtunities but not the oppurtunities in the KGP life, in non-academic as well as academic fields. You have to start it right from the first year of your KGP life. It is a cumulative business.

For example, if you somehow missed the chance to be a sub-head in SF, you do not have the one in a million chance to become a head. In fact, in some way, this is quite justified because someone who was a subhead knows about the way the event was organised last year, and he also worked hard last year to earn this position. But, may be in some cases there are people who can do the work better than last year's subheads, but cannot be elected to the post of Head because it is against the convention.

But, you can also not start from the scratch at a later stage because those positions are meant only for the juniors and if you take them, where will they go? Also, there is the issue of the ego of being a senior. So, where will you go if you woke up from your slumber of inactivity after two long years?

Truly speaking, it happens with quite a many guys, mainly in third year. First year was absorbed in getting adjusted to the KGP life, Mess food, electrical lab, stinking toilets and what not. Second years may be initially frightened of words like OP and all. Also, department load is also quite heavy in many departments in second year, so the poor guy could not get time to pursue his interests.

In fact, this is also the case with CGPA, as one of my senior said once "Law of inertia of CGPA". If you could not perform well in first year and went to becoem a chaggi or satti, 8 out of 10 times, u remain a chaggi or satti. In fact, some of my friends do quip that if nehlis even leave their paper blank, they wont end up with anything less than an A or Ex. So, just because you had a bad time in first year, may be you were not interested to do things like Engineering drawing, had a poor english or something like that, your whole academic transcript should not be spoiled. It is not fair. I believe there needs to be a separate Departmental CGPA, and first year CGPA in IIT curricullum. And, people should be made to use department CGPA for jobs and apping etc. And, first year CG should be taken into account only in dep-C or may be a fraction of first year credits be used in overall CGPA computation.

Truly, one must always be presented with a chance to improve in confirmation with the age old adage "It is never too late to start again".

Hey Modi ...u r fuckin right man!!!..its truly very sad that first year nightmares keep haunting u till the very end of ur academic career... n more so even later...The law of cumulatives..is seriously sth which this IIT system shud do away with...n u have very rightly and aptly summarised the funda of not being included in the elite league of the Subheads n Heads of Gymkhana n SF if u hv somehow missed ur initial chance ...their is no looking back here ... I mean purane paap dhone ke mauke nahi milte .....

This is in response to ur comment on Arvind's blog..

I'll reproduce ur comment for ur, or anyone's, convenience...

"I am really sad to know this, this is a barbaric attitude by the institute and we must oppose it in an organised manner. I am ready to join hands with any1 attempting to raise voice against this autocracy and tyranny. What are your editors doing?? sleeping in their cosy beds?? This is the time for action and show the mettle of your pen to prove your might to those sitting at the top."

Thankew for ur concern abt Schols Ave..

I intend here to remove some of ur misconceptions that seem to flagrantly shout out at some members of Schols Ave..

No Mr. Modi, we arent sleeping on our cozy beds. Whats more, we arent sleeping much at all.

What makes you think that the people who have run from pillar to post these last three months in order to build Schols Ave from scratch to a position which is exemplified pretty well by the first comment to this current post of yours are 'sleeping on their cozy beds' while the microcosm they dreamt of gets quietly swept off?

Just because we arent crying ourselves hoarse or galvanising junta for an upheaval or doing anything equally crazy and deleterious to our prospects of staging a comeback, doesnt mean we are sitting with our heads in our hands and counting the birds in the sky..

Its easy to throw caution to the winds, Mr. Modi. Only they tread with care who have something to lose..

Thank you again for your support.. we'd like to assure you that we're trying our level best to be back..

This isnt Rome, Mr. Modi.. and we certainly dont fancy playing Nero..

Yours Sincerely,
On behalf of the editors of Scholars Avenue,
Sunny

If there is a significant difference in your dep CG and non-dep (random courses) CG, you can explain it. In fact, it worked out really well for me. I had a horrible GPA (high 8) in the first year which kept on going up through the years, showing that I cared about improving my GPA. Good luck!
