RESERVED

How often have u encountered this tag? RESERVED ... may be at some occassion for special dignitaries, some heads at some social functions ...in short for people who have earned it by their hard work. But, what when you apply for a job and return empty-handed because it is reserved. Even worse, when you cannot get education that you deserve just because someone having a caste label (SC/ST) had it reserved for him. This is what we have achieved in 50 years, instead of getting free and compulsory education for all, what we are doing is putting the boards of the few positions of excellence in the name of caste and tribe. Those people who worship Babasaheb Ambedkar (the chairperson of the constitution's drafting committee) often forget that the position and accolades achieved by him were without the crutches of reservation. They also forget that initially, reservation was proposed only for 10 years to undo the wrongs done to our under-privileged brothers and sisters. But, politicians have since then passed resolution unanimously to renew it every 10 years because none of the parties and politicians can bear the grave risk (or shall i say suicide step in this democracy where around 17% poplation is SC/ST and 8% votes can romp u to victory?) of being seen as anti-poor, anti-lowercaste, pro-uppercaste or say the worst of all, party of rich and influential?

I know none is ready to take the acerbic pill of going anti-reservation which is as much necessary for the upgradation of this society as much is a medicine for a patient. We have only two options: either take the medicine and enjoy the ongoing rise on development curve or promote reservation and take this country into wilderness and darkness. If someone has been following papers, he must not have missed how Kapil Sibbal felt the same, though I am sorry to know that he too does not have the guts to defend his statements and has retracted them for cheap popularity. After Murli Manohar joshi who tried tempering with the autonomy of IIT and IIMs, there is Mr. Arjun Singh, the senile man who will impose the burden of OBC reservation on this institutes of prominence. The politicians just seem to be getting worse everyday.

What they do not follow is reservation takes the country in a vicious circle and is eating this nation like a cancer. One person gets reservation, an incompetent engineer/manager from best of institutes like IIT/IIM ... a waste of tax payers' money .. the fellow cannot get himself a job in MNC (still they do not have reservation)..so govt. again comes to rescue, this incompetent fool makes merry with govt. money for no work, makes a mess of every job, still gets promotion (reservation) and his son again (with best of education and no brains) does no hard work because he knows he has a seat reserved in IIT and IIM...I do not blame the guy, did u ever rush to train after having a reserved ticket, just be on time.. the boy also just appears in JEE and CAT and gets in his reserved seat.

The loss is two-fold, what these SC/ST people face in these colleges is a feeling of unwelcomeness, a hatred, a mental and social boycott .. they need to work hard to get themselves accepted .. they feel like they are in a place where they do not belong.
And, then they are left behind in most competitions .. most jobs .. most class ranks... they feel that a label of laggard is being attached to them.

And, a poor deserving high-caste curses himself to death for being denied an equal oppurtunity and we must remember that a nation which does not respect its talent, is condemned to death and destruction.

Everything accepted...but what's the solution??? That's what one ought to think about...mere blaming the policy and politicians won't do...read my post on this issue @ http://abhieshek.blogspot.com/2006/04/495.html I have tried to come up with a solution to it. Do let me know if you agree with my statement.

Nicely written article
I really appreciate
"did u ever rush to train after having a reserved ticket, just be on time.. the boy also just appears in JEE and CAT and gets in his reserved seat."

This shortcut mentality is really harmful to the society.

Its really pain for me to see someone with 99.8 getting chucked out of IIMs and someone with 88 getting in.

OUR NATION IS LOOSING A LOT DUE TO THIS.

hey..good one..but i guess it hit hard at times.. 'incompetent fool'??now thts a bit mean na?n regarding social acceptance..in my coll there are sc/st ppl but we dont stop talkin to them though we kno tht somebody more deserving has lost the seat..i'm sure it doesn happen at an iit also..so the then underprivileged dont have any problem of social acceptance now..or so i feel.

@abhieshek:
My blog is much more opinionated where as urs is well-researched and informative. And, the use of reservation on economic criterion rather than on caste is not a novel solution proposed by you, it is everywhere and hence, I omitted it in this post, may be sometime later.

@rushikesh:
yes, it pains dude.

@divya:
I take my food in the same plate with a few SC/ST people in my batch, we never know if he is a reserved category student but he is not dumb and wud have made to JEE even without reservation, may be not in a cream department like CSE. When I say incompetent fools, I am indicating those people who cannot fulfil minimal requirements for studying engineering. The IIT takes them to fill seats, gives them a preparatory course for a year and even after that, these people take 6 years to clear a 4-year Btech ...Institutes' resources of creating 2 great engineers wasted with an addition of a dumbo.

Today i read KapilModi's comment against reservation. i think he is
under age and dont have any knowledge about the real social imbalance.
Being in ahmadabad he forget every thing abot the poor.Being in
ahmadabad he is thinking that he is most intellegent man in the world. but for
kind information i would like to say him that in my small village
Chuhitia,P.O-Birney P.S-Ganwan,Dist-Giridih, of total population 2000 at
least 200 people is more intellegent then then MrModi.today he is in in
labour class becaus he does not get the oppurtinity,his proverty come in
their way.Yes mr Modi is true only fore the student who get admited
through backdoor or he may have seen a son of reach father.but he is
absolutely wrong abot those who is performig on his merit.so,to i think
goverment shold try to check the back door entry in the higher institute
rather then stoping reservation.stoping the reservation will cause more
imbalanc and more social instsblity
thanks

Mr. Choudhary,

I respect your feelings. But, reservation has not benefitted those for whom it is meant, its benefits are swallowed by the powerful and mighty in the name of caste.

One does not need the crutches of reservation to succeed, he needs to break free of all shackles and win the race of life.
